Canaan to Organize this Year

By Missionary Walter R. GouldingCanaan MBC voted unanimously to petition the sponsoring church – Poplar Head MBC of Glennville, GA – to grant letters to organize into a New Testament church in September, 2008.Just as children grow up and leave home to form their own home, even so we should rejoice that the time is coming near to become an independent, autonomous, sovereign and indigenous church – I preached Sunday morning. While we often experience a little nostalgia when our children leave the nest, we know that it is part of the process of life and that they need to move on and carry on their own lives. We only hope and trust that the training has been adequate and sufficient. When a mission has a core of members who have been grounded in the faith as Missionary Baptists all their lives, they can usually organize into a church within a few short years. On the other hand, when most or all come from a Roman Catholic or Protestant background, grounding in the faith often becomes a slow and patiencetrying process. Even those who are Baptists from other groups often do not know or even understand the scriptural way of carrying out church business. For example… two got offended last Sunday. In the lesson, I stated that the god of the Roman Catholic Church is not the God of the Bible. I explained that the R. C. position is that sex was the Original Sin. If that were the case (and it is easy to prove that this is a false doctrine), then they worship a dishonest god. It is written, “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:” (Genesis1:28a). According to R. C. teaching, he then condemns them for being obedient to the commandment. Telling a child to do something and then chastising him for doing it is dishonesty, I stated Sunday. It takes time to replace santeria, Virgin Mary worship, and even open spiritism with the true gospel. It also takes time to ground in the concept of a local, visible church body in those who only know of a universal, invisible church. Then – a thought that nags not a few missionaries – was expressed by one of the National missionaries in his devotional this morning at our Preachers Breakfast. He wondered, “Will they remain faithful after we organize the mission into a church and move on?” We can do no better than the Apostle Paul when he said goodbye to the elders of the church in Ephesus. “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).Canaan MBCHeredia, Costa RicaApril 2008 AveragesSunday School. . . . . . . . . . .36A.M.
